STANLEY, NC (August 15) – Chris Steele etched his name in the record books at East Lincoln Speedway as the York, SC native captured the $1,500 win in City Chevrolet’s ‘Hot Summer Nights Round 2’ presented by Bea’s Gift Baskets.
Jordan Alexander and Jon Thornburg shared the front row for the start of the 25 lap GM Performance Late Model main event. Thornburg bolted to the point from his pole position as Alexander fell into second. Charlotte, NC’s Gary Puckett flexed his muscle and slid past Alexander on lap five for the runner-up spot. Fourth starting Steele patiently worked his way past Alexander and began to challenge Puckett for second near the mid-point of the event.
Steele made the move to second on lap 16 and quickly began to reel in Thornburg. Steele stayed glued to the inside of the speedway as Thornburg motored around the middle of the track. On lap 19 Thornburg slipped off turn four allowing Steele to move into the lead. Meanwhile Alexander moved back into the mix as he slid around Puckett and closed on the two leaders.
Steele looked to be in cruise control until a late caution bunched the field with two laps to go. On the restart Steele motored away as Alexander tried to move past Thornburg for second. As the two raced door to door into turn three on the final lap they made contact with both cars spinning. Alexander did two 360 degree spins as Puckett and the rest of the field took evasive action. Puckett dove to the bottom with Josh Harwell glued to his bumper and at the line it was Steele winning over Puckett, Harwell, Alexander and Mike Walker.
In the Steele Rubber Products Limited Sportsman feature it was first time East Lincoln Speedway starter Terry Brooks Jr, taking the win. Chris Smith took second over Keith Bowman, Blaine Huffman and Ronnie White.
Wertz, VA’s Robert Clements captured the Micro Sprint feature win. He was followed to the line by; Brian Roseman, Jonathan Harper, Steve McElroy and Darren Hasty.
Swain Morris won a wild Advance Auto Parts Stock Four main event. David Lucas was second with Jamie Major third, Pechi Fioraminit fourth and Brian Nuhfer fifth.
Jeff Crump made a late pass of A.J. Pallidino to collect the Bea’s Gift Basket Rookie Four win. Second through fifth went to Palladino, Lee Oiler, Kenny Willett and Silas Reynolds.
